Tony Spiridon Atieh

Tony Spiridon Atieh, 76, passed away peacefully on the evening of April 18, 2026, surrounded by family, just one hour after witnessing the marriage of his youngest daughter. He fought a courageous one-year battle with cancer until his final moments. Born in Debel, Lebanon, on July 8, 1949, Tony was a hard worker from his earliest days. He spent his youth assisting his parents in the fields, studying intensely, defeating countless kids at marbles, and picking fruits with his two brothers - his lifelong best friends. "Antoon," as they called him, was an accounting savant and at the age of 20 was sought after by Lebanon's top businesses. As he built his way to the top, civil war erupted in 1975, shifting Tony’s focus from success to survival. He pushed through the difficulties, finding work, building a home, and meeting the love of his life amidst the conflict. In June of 1980, he married his love, Claire. Together, they raised their first two children, Spiro and Nadine, providing them with a nurturing life despite the hardships of war. Tony risked his life daily during those years to ensure his family was fed and safe. In 1989, with the incredible help of his siblings and the support of his wife, Tony made the difficult decision to leave behind everything they had built in Lebanon to secure a safer future for his family in San Luis Obispo, California. Upon arrival, he immediately began managing the Economy Motel and taking care of the kids, while Claire worked two jobs to provide for their growing family. They were later blessed with their third child, Vicky, who was definitely his favorite. Tony’s top hobby was, above all else, providing for his family. In his moments of leisure, he enjoyed tennis, listening to Yanni, walking on the beach, dancing, singing, and—most importantly—enjoying his wife’s cooking. He is survived by his beloved wife, Claire, his unwavering partner whose strength, sacrifice and boundless love carried him through his final year; his son, Spiro (wife Tamiko Atieh); his daughters, Nadine (late husband James Hade) and Vicky (husband Brayden Ryan); his cherished grandchildren, Aiden and Amarae; his brothers, John Atiya (wife Diana) and Melad Atiya (wife Zeina); and a bountiful extended family of nieces, nephews, and their families, each of whom he loved dearly and took great pride in. Tony was surely greeted at heaven’s door by a plethora of loved ones including his parents, Spiridon and Salimah; his four sisters, Jeanette, Sarah, Mary and Samira; his nephew, Zahi; his son-in-law, James; and his grandson, Tyler. We imagine him reunited with them sharing stories and laughter, just as we continue to do here in his honor. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10 am on May 1 st , at the Mission Church, followed by burial and a celebration of life luncheon.
