James Edward Afable

James Edward Afable passed away peacefully on Monday, August 24, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Born on February 22, 1965, in Washington, D.C., to Antonio M. and Bessie Christina Afable, James grew up immersed in the military community due to his father's active service in the United States Navy. His early years were filled with unique travels, including time in Kenitra, Morocco, the Philippines, and several military bases across Southern California. In 1977, his family settled in Baldwin Park, California, where James would form deep, lifelong friendships. Throughout his career, James proved to be a dedicated worker with a strong work ethic. He spent many years working in the oil fields of Oklahoma before returning to California, where he worked at the Solar farm in California Valley and later as a delivery driver for various companies. Though quiet and deeply private, James possessed immense inner strength and resilience. Overcoming health challenges—including a stroke three years ago that left him with left-sided weakness—he continued to work and maintain his fierce independence, always putting others first and striving never to be a burden. In March 2024, he moved to Arroyo Grande to be closer to his family for support as he navigated his health. Above all, James had a big heart and loved his family to his absolute core. He leaves behind a rich legacy through his children and grandchildren, who brought him immense pride and joy. James was preceded in death by his mother, Bessie Christina Afable (2005); his father, Antonio M. Afable (2017); and his older sister, Antoinette Gutierrez (April 2025). He is survived by his beloved children: Tiffany (Joseph), Brittany (Erik), Brianne, Jasmine, Crystal, and James Jr. He was a proud, devoted Lolo to his grandchildren Logan, Khloe, Blakely, Isaiah, Maverick, Lincoln, and Phoenix. He is also survived by his sister, Connie; brothers-in-law Marty Solis and Tom Gutierrez; his aunt Linda of Maryland; nieces and nephews Phillip, Christina, Brenna, Mariah, and Thomas; along with numerous cousins and dear friends. James was a quiet pillar of love and strength, and his presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 5, 2026 at 11am at Reis Family Mortuary in San Luis Obispo
