Gregory Leroy Porte

Gregory LeRoy Porte, 82, of San Luis Obispo California, passed away due to complications from Covid on March 9, 2023. He passed peacefully with his family by his side. Greg was the third generation to San Luis Obispo county and born at his grandparents’ home that still stands in downtown Cambria. He graduated from San Luis Obispo high school in 1958 and went on to play football at College of the Sequoias. Following in his father’s footsteps Greg went on to become a truck driver and in 1981 he established Greg Porte Trucking, Inc. Greg never retired, he continued driving truck and doing what he loved, almost right up to the time of his illness. Greg was the rock of his family; loving and dependable, he lived his life with integrity and on his own terms. He was hard-working, honest, and was the first one there to help anyone. Greg never had a complaint, if he was ever sick or in pain, nobody would’ve known it. His life‘s philosophies were simple; “There’s always an answer, just figure it out”, “You get up and you do what needs to be done.” and “If you’re going to do it, do it right.” Cars were Greg’s lifelong passion, which he shared with his son, Greg. They restored a 1932 Roadster together and Greg spent 20 years as part of his son’s modified midget and sprint car crews. Greg was just finishing his latest project; the 1963 Galaxy LX he purchased new with his wife, Betty Ann Strieff, for their wedding August 17, 1963. Greg is survived by his wife Betty Ann, his daughter Tracy Mandell and her husband Eric, his son Greg Porte and his wife Angela, his four grandchildren; Zane Mandell, Cassidy Mandell, Alexandra Barton and Ashley Hillman, her husband Justin, Greg’s two great grandchildren; Brooklynn and Maddison Hillman, his siblings; Penny Martinez, Kathy Rodriguez and Laura Porte; his sister-in-law, Lorraine Laughlin, as well as 26 nieces and nephews. Greg is preceded by his father Leroy, his mother, Kay and his siblings; Louis Porte, Linda McDonnell and Marcelee Winkler. There will be a Celebration of Life for Greg on Friday March 24, 2023 from 4-6pm at The Octagon Barn 4400 Octagon Way, San Luis Obispo, CA 93401. Please join us.
